3 Things Pet Owners Should Keep in Mind When Repainting Their Home

Life is simply better with your pet at your side! However, most pet owners will agree that as much as they love their furry friend, they can sometimes make life a little more complicated. While this holds true for things like planning vacations, having guests over, and the constant need for vacuuming, did you know that it doesn’t have to apply to painting your home? Here are a few things you should keep in mind if you’d love to repaint your home’s interior but are unsure about how your pet will impact the process.

Use Toxic-Free Tints

When painting with pets, one thing to keep in mind is that paint is often made from all kinds of chemicals and formulas – and these aren’t always pet (or people)-friendly! You should avoid oil- and latex-based paints that contain VOCs (volatile organic compounds) since these can emit harmful fumes. On the other hand, paints that are made from natural ingredients like water, plant dyes, and essential oils are safer for your home and all who inhabit it.

Choose Your Colors Wisely

There are few doubts about this being the most exciting part of the painting process; it’s a chance to show off your stylish preferences! However, pet owners must carefully weigh their options here; colors like bright red, blue, and green show scuffs and smudges quite easily, meaning that you may have to go with your second or third choice if your first won’t hold up well against this damage.

On the other hand, opting for a shade of white or something lighter could work if you’re diligent about keeping your walls clean; while these lighter shades may show marks more visibly, you’ll at least be able to quickly identify and address them!

Maintain Your Paint

On a related note, you should strive to keep your painted walls clean and free of damage. It goes without saying that as lovable as our pets are, they’re not exactly as tidy as we are – and some pets tend to be messier than others. This can lead to all kinds of excess dirt, debris, and stains on your walls in addition to cracks, chips, and otherwise compromised paint. In turn, this will severely shorten the overall lifespan of your paint, which means that you’ll have to commit more future time and money to repaint.

Wiping down your walls every week or two is one of the best and simplest ways to keep your walls free of build-up or unsightly marks. Touch-up kits and paint solvents exist that can also safely treat stains, scuffs, cracks, and more. Do yourself and your pets a favor by taking care of your painted walls, so that everyone can enjoy them longer!
