As a homeowner, there are few things as exciting as kicking off an exterior painting project! However, it’s always wise to consider what your homeowner’s association (HOA) will allow when it comes to exterior modification. Here are four tips that you’ll want to keep in mind as you begin navigating the exterior painting process so that you don’t risk upsetting your HOA, or worse, end up being fined!
1. Familiarize Yourself with Rules and Restrictions
Many HOAs have particularly rigid guidelines when it comes to things like landscaping, lawn ornaments, and exterior paint. While many of these restrictions might seem arbitrary, they exist to help give the neighborhood an organized and harmonious feel. You might only be allowed to use certain color schemes, finishes, or even specific brands of paint. Before you get started, be sure that you’ve carefully reviewed all relevant guidelines concerning exterior modification.
2. Look at Your Neighbors’ Homes
Generally speaking, HOAs want the homes in their communities to feel similar, but not look identical. This is why many of these associations won’t allow you to use the very same color schemes as your next-door neighbors. That said, you might have to instead look at the houses around you and mark those schemes off your list. You can still use them as inspiration, but just don’t simply copy their colors!
3. Ask for Permission Beforehand
You’re going to want to ask permission from your HOA before you begin painting. Usually, an email or written letter is fine, sent to the appropriate member. This will give them the chance to review your request and make sure you’re not doing anything that isn’t allowed. If you do your research beforehand, you shouldn’t run into any problems having your project approved.
4. Use a Professional Team
You shouldn’t hesitate to entrust your project to a team of professionals, especially if you’re having doubts about what your HOA will allow. Even if you follow all guidelines, your paint job might end up simply being sloppy—and this could cause problems, too! It’s a safe bet to have a trustworthy team of painters handle the task; they’ll follow all rules and produce spectacular results that you and your HOA will love!
